How to Tell An Antique is Worth Something
If you frequent yard sales, thrift stores, and antique shops, you’ve likely come across goods that are worth a lot of money. If you aren’t a skilled antique shopper, it may be difficult to decipher what makes an older piece of jewelry, knick-knack or piece of furniture worth money, and what makes it simply…old. Above anything else, the antique you are considering must be in the best possible condition. Wear and tear will seriously diminish the value of any antique.
Determine the age of the antique. If the piece is old enough, it is most likely handmade and should have a stamp, or crafter’s initial somewhere on it. If you’re unsure, ask the seller. Do your research, and explore your local library and the Internet to compare the item with similar items worth a lot of money. Get a second and third opinion. If you cannot locate an artist stamp, the item is highly worn, and you cannot find information on the item, or similar items, the antique is probably not worth a lot of money. However, if the seller, and other antique experts can verify the value, you may have found yourself an antique treasure.
