How to Tell An Antique is Worth Something

Posted by Erin | Comments (0)

If you frequent yard sales, thrift stores, and antique shops, you’ve likely come across goods that are worth a lot of money. If you aren’t a skilled antique shopper, it may be difficult to decipher what makes an older piece of jewelry, knick-knack or piece of furniture worth money, and what makes it simply…old. Above anything else, the antique you are considering must be in the best possible condition. Wear and tear will seriously diminish the value of any antique.

Determine the age of the antique. If the piece is old enough, it is most likely handmade and should have a stamp, or crafter’s initial somewhere on it. If you’re unsure, ask the seller. Do your research, and explore your local library and the Internet to compare the item with similar items worth a lot of money. Get a second and third opinion. If you cannot locate an artist stamp, the item is highly worn, and you cannot find information on the item, or similar items, the antique is probably not worth a lot of money. However, if the seller, and other antique experts can verify the value, you may have found yourself an antique treasure.

Buying Used DVDS Online

Posted by Erin | Comments (0)

Today’s turbulent economy has many people trying to cut costs wherever they can. If you love watching movies, but cannot continue to afford purchasing new DVDs, investing in gently used DVDs is a viable option. Websites such as Amazon, eBay and CraigsList have an abundance of used DVDs available for purchase. However, it is important to be a vigilant shopper to get the best quality DVD, at the best price.

Websites like Amazon require sellers to post the quality of the DVD they are trying to sell, so avoid “poor” quality used movies. Additionally, both Amazon and eBay showcase the seller history of the person or company you will be buying from. If the seller has a poor history, you may want to reconsider your purchase. CraigsList typically consists of one-time sellers looking to sell extra items. Email or phone the seller to inquire about the quality and price of the DVD. Generally speaking, it’s easy to find minimally used DVDs for less than 10 dollars, so you can continue to collect your favorite movie titles without breaking the bank.

Fusions in Footwear

Posted by Ernest | Comments (0)

I have always been a fan of Jordans basketball shoes. They almost always look good and are very good quality shoes for playing ball. On the other hand, I think that the Nike Air Force 1’s are very cool looking but do not function as well for basketball.

Jordans (which is owned by Nike) combines the looks of some of their classic shoes with the look of the Air Force 1’s. These are called the Fusion series and they’re really popular. These shoes have a little from both worlds and usually have the upper area of one of the many classic Jordans sneakers while the lower area and sole usually look like Air Force 1’s.

In my opinion, the Fusions are some of the coolest shoes yet and I hope they continue to make new ones. One problem with the Fusions is that they are not really that good for basketball. They tend to fall apart when used to play intense basketball frequently. But I think that they are great shoes; manly for looks.

Getting Ready for Black Friday

Posted by Ernest | Comments (0)

While many are thinking of nothing but preparing the turkey and dressing for Thanksgiving, there are others preparing for the biggest retail shopping day of the year; Black Sunday. To watch all the preparation that goes into this hallowed day is much like watching someone packing and double checking every fold in a parachute before the big jump. There are schedules to coordinate, coupons to organize, people to call and transportation with room for packages to plan. You would think an army operation is taking place.

For those of us who do not enjoy shopping and crowds, we can’t even begin to understand the highs this day brings to those avid bargain hunter shoppers out to get the best deals of the year! However, it is fun seeing the precision at which these people operate and knowing that while we sit at home enjoying the ball games, family board games and such, these well trained shoppers are out there fighting in the pit to get the best toy, a pair of shoes at a whopping 85% discount or the next best thing for the teenager in the house. It is a day that will go down in holiday history.

Getting New Ideas for Your Yard

Posted by Ernest | Comments (0)

One of the things I have always loved to do is find great landscaping pictures on the internet to get ideas of things I can do in my own yard. But what I am finding is there is a big difference of things I Can Do as opposed to the things I want to do; they are just beyond my skill level. So this past spring, I decided to do more than just look at pictures; I called a local landscaping company and had them come out and help me design the yard I have always wanted. We discussed the things I could do and the things I would need help with and made plans to get it done over the course of a year so I could pay as we go.

Though the job is not completely finished, I am so pleased with what has been done thus far that I just had to write about it. The walkway that was put in, the front patio and the back deck is great and we have planted some of the trees that needed to be planted this fall so they will be ready to rock and roll next year. I am waiting until next spring to put in the water feature fountain and the annuals that my wife loves so much but I can already see this is going to be a great space to entertain and have fun as a family. I could not of done it without the professional help that I have received.

How to Find a Real Estate Rock Star to Sell Your Home

Posted by Erin | Comments (0)

What some realtors do when they list your home is stick a sign in your yard and put it on the local Multiple Listing System (MLS) and there it sits until it matches someone’s search criteria and pops up. Though this may seem like it’s enough, it’s not in today’s market.

Liz Davis at Liz Davis Homes shared with me an entire marketing strategy for today’s sellers that get their house seen, and hopefully sold within the first four weeks; if the price is set correctly. This marketing plan consists of getting the house listed on Realtor.com, the number one real estate search site in the US, Listed on RE/MAX.com, the areas MLS system, LizDavisHomes.com, Craigslist, See Realtor.com and Point2 MLS Portal that places your home on thirty five additional websites. This goes along with the traditional open house that is advertised in the local paper and a real estate agent tour. She also prepares a four color flyer with professional pictures for your front yard and home, emails a digital flyer to other realtors in the neighborhood, sends postcards to your neighbors and places ads in local newspapers! This is what Rock Start Realtor will do for you to sell your home.

Finding Great Deals at the Local Nursery

Posted by Ernest | Comments (0)

It’s the perfect time of the year to look for plants to put in your yard and garden for late summer and fall blooming or to buy annuals and plant them to come up next year. Nursery’s are feeling the pinch this year and have stock that they want to get rid of because it’s hard to preserve it throughout the winter unless they have an extensive greenhouse system. For this reason the prices are sometimes deeply discounted and you don’t want to miss an opportunity like this of you are in the market for great plants.

You may want to hire a landscaping consultant to go with you and pick plants that will work in your yard and native environment so you don’t pick up something that sounds great but doesn’t produce like you thought it would. Having someone who is on your side will, in the long term, will be advantageous to your shopping and growing experience. Get the help you need when you need it and not after it becomes a problem.

Be a Rhino Shopper

Posted by Erin | Comments (0)

Rhinos are aggressive when they need to be. They protect their resources and make an effort to keep the best for themselves. Do you shop this way? Do you wave your horn when you go looking for the best deals, to intimidate the best deals out of retailers?

A Rhino Shopper is:

  • Committed to finding the best, juiciest deals.
  • Not afraid to throw a little weight around to get their way.
  • Demanding of a fair deal, especially when advertised that way.
  • Fast to act to get there first.
  • Resourceful and able to make a little go a long way.
  • Dangerous. Don’t get between a Rhino shopper and the thing they want!
